Choosing the Right Solar Controller/Regulator
PWM is a good low-cost option:
• For smaller systems
• Where system efficiency does not matter, such as trickle charging.
• For solar panels with maximum supply voltage (Vmp) up to 18V for charging 12V batteries (36V for 24V batteries etc).
MPPT controllers are the best:
• For larger systems, an additional 20%* or more of energy harvesting is worthwhile
• When the solar array voltage is significantly higher than the battery voltage, such as using a household panel to charge a 12V battery
If wired correctly, multiple solar chargers (any combination of type and rating) can be added to charge the battery. Proper wiring means that each solar charger is best individually connected directly to the battery terminals. This ideal situation means that each controller will "see" the battery voltage and will not be affected by current flow from other charge controllers. The controllers obviously don't have the same charging characteristics and may have different settings that will charge according to their programmed characteristics. The situation is no different than charging the battery from the grid/generator while charging from the sun. With modern controllers, current doesn't flow back from the battery to the controller (except for very small quiescent currents).
